Health department officials in Fairfax said the adult resident who contracted the disease lives in the northeastern part of the county.
Reports of West Nile infection comes after the deadly spread of the Nipah virus in the district.
"The recent wet and increasing hot weather has created the flawless conditions for the Culex mosquito that carries West Nile Virus", Mark E. Wallace, Executive Director of the Weld County Health Department wrote in a release. "It only takes one bite from an infected Culex tarsalis mosquito to be exposed to WNV".
"But through a very aggressive trapping and monitoring program we're seeing higher numbers of West Nile virus infected mosquito pools". But officials say to avoid false positives, which are common among such infections, a second sample will be sent to NIV in 10 days for a confirmation. But one person was infected a year ago and survived.in 2016, two people contracted the disease with one death. About one in five will develop flu-like symptoms that can include fever, headache, body aches, joint pains, vomiting, diarrhea or rash. Drain any standing water in your yard each week. The types of mosquitoes that transmit WNV to humans most commonly breed in urban areas in places that hold water such as bird baths, plant pots, old toys and tires.
Those who are 60 years of age or older are at the greatest risk along with those who have medical conditions like cancer, diabetes, hypertension, kidney disease, and or who have received organ transplants. Spray clothing with insect repellent since mosquitoes may bite through clothing.
The health department also suggests mosquito-proofing your home by installing screens on windows and doors and using air conditioning, if available.
