"Making a deal is a great thing for the world, it's also a great thing for China, I can't imagine that China is happy with someone having nuclear weapons so close", Mr Trump told reporters in Singapore after his historic meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.
"He's the head of a country - and I mean he's the strong head, don't let anyone think anything different", he said.
'War games'Asked about North Korean human rights abuses, Trump said "I can't speak to that".
"I don't want to see a nuclear weapon destroy you and your family", he told reporters.
Some of Trump's domestic critics condemned his decision to halt what the president calls "war games" with South Korea - using a pejorative term for military drills that U.S. officials have previously rejected.
During the Fox & Friends interview, Steve Doocy didn't ask Trump to explain his remark about wanting to be treated like Kim, but instead immediately moved on to other topics.
Later, when pressed by a CNN reporter about the comment, Trump claimed it had been a joke.
"If you can do that at 27 years old, I mean that's one in 10,000 that could do that", said the president, adding: "He's a very smart guy, he's a great negotiator". They may also discuss efforts to recover the remains of soldiers missing and presumed dead from the 1950-53 Korean War.
He went on to say that when Kim speaks, "his people sit up at attention".
North Korea's official Pyongyang Broadcasting Station said on Friday that the issue of the North's past abductions of Japanese nationals has "already been settled", according to the Tokyo-based Radio Press news agency.
