Reality star Kim Kardashian West had visited Trump in the White House a week ago to seek Johnson's commutation, and she shared that the commutation has been granted. The statement noted Johnson was known as a mentor to other inmates, and cited recommendations for clemency from prison officials.
While the White House hasn't reached out to Johnson directly since the news, Trump did wish her good luck over Twitter on Thursday.
Christine Samra is a web and social media producer for KPIX 5.
Johnson was sentenced to life after she was convicted on charges of conspiracy to possess cocaine and attempted possession of cocaine in 1996. "I can't wait to get back on the workforce and get back to my community", she told a gathering of family members and supporters.
While Alice's conviction has not been pardoned, and will not be erased, the commute effectively ends her sentence.
The president has also signaled that he could similarly favor lifestyle guru Martha Stewart, who went to jail for making false statements in an insider trading case, and commute the prison sentence of Rod Blagojevich, a former governor of IL convicted of corruption. She said she turned her life around in prison and decided that she wasn't "going to just do time or let time do me".
"If you've noticed, I keep touching her because it's hard to believe she's actually here", said Catina Scales, Johnson's daughter. Thank you for taking the time to look at my case, and feel like I deserve a second chance in life. I reckon this is awful,"Aly said bluntly".
Trump has taken a much different approach to presidential pardon power than his predecessor.
Johnson had a motion pending for a reduction in her sentence when Trump made his decision, but federal prosecutors opposed it because they argued it was in accordance with federal guidelines. And he granted a posthumous pardon to boxing's first black heavyweight champion, a case championed by actor Sylvester Stallone.
