Pedroia and Mookie Betts have a long way to go to catch Jim Rice and Dwight Evans, but with Pedroia back in the lineup - and signed through the 2021 season - they have some time to make inroads on the Sox' all-time leaders in homering in the same game.
Dombrowski said it was Cora who first suggested the move, an idea borne of recent struggles endured by Ramirez in the heart of the Boston order. "Wish him the best".
The Red Sox will now have seven days to trade or release Ramirez.
He had a single, homer and triple Saturday and has missed the cycle by one hit three times this month and four times already this year.
"I was a little bit surprised", Dombrowski said. "Platoon, maybe come in and pinch hit late in games - that's not the flawless role for Hanley Ramirez".
The 34-year-old Ramirez has more than $15 million left on his contract for this season. I don't know if they're going to pitch around J.D.to get to Mitch when they have the lefty ready. But what they really want to avoid is paying Ramirez $22 million in 2019.
Red Sox president Dave Dombrowski said Ramirez's vesting option did not factor into the Red Sox's decision. In his four seasons with the Red Sox, he provided above-average offense in only 2016.
"He's been OK" at first base, said Dombrowski, but "he's not been Mitch Moreland, as far as that is concerned".
Dombrowski told reporters that manager Alex Cora suggested the move to designate Ramirez.
The Blue Jays are on the hook for the money regardless if Morales is on the team or not so why not follow suit like the Red Sox and cut ties with Morales once and for all. Moreland had two hits as he becomes the primary first baseman with Ramirez out of the picture. I was like, 'That worked.' For him to come in to come in and catch a knuckleballer after not catching since Fort Myers or whenever the last time he caught, that caught my eye.
Remember in 2015 when Ramirez was so bad in left field there were questions over whether or not he had a place on the roster, then he finally left the team with an injury and went home to Miami before the season was even over? "Honestly, I do feel that guys might open up because you don't have that presence, you don't have a guy that's been in the big leagues for X-amount of years, he's a veteran, a guy that is very outspoken in the clubhouse". "He needs his at-bats".
Ramirez was better there than in the outfield but as Dombrowski said yesterday, that move didn't suit Ramirez either. "Love you always", Ramirez tweeted. In cutting him altogether, the Red Sox dodged a storm that was bound to come.
