YouTube is promising an expanded slate of original content including comedies, dramas, reality series and action adventure shows from the U.K., Germany, France, Mexico and more.
A subscription to YouTube Premium (which includes YouTube Music) will cost $11.99 per month. But with the introduction of YouTube Music Premium, the streamer is separating the experiences for original programming and music.
It's coming to some countries as soon as this Tuesday, May 22nd.
The new music service will see YouTube compete with the likes of Spotify which recently entered the South African market, Apple Music, its own Google Play Music and many other music streaming services. It also gives users premium access to a new YouTube Music streaming service.
For existing YouTube Red members, the current price will continue for YouTube Premium, it said. They will not have to pay another membership fee for the YouTube Music Premium since the company has confirmed that the latter becomes one of the perks of paying for a Google Play Music subscription.
Gone for good is YouTube Red - at least as a brand. The service will have a personalized home screen where it can provide recommendations based on the user's listening behavior.
Revenue from music streaming services overtook sales of CDs and digital downloads for the first time past year, according to the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry.
Subscribers will also get a new mobile app and a new desktop player, both of which are optimized for music listening. So if you haven't signed up for YouTube Red already, now is the time.
So, where does ad-free video come in?
The new service promises the chance to stream millions of tracks alongside YouTube's vast catalog of rarities and remixes uploaded by users.
