"It turned out that Pompeo's absence was more than justified, and any aging technology on his plane didn't prevent him from leaving Pyongyang with three Americans that have been held captive overseas", Fox News wrote.
Trump, who made the announcement on his Twitter handle, said he and Kim would "try to make it a very special moment for world peace".
The return of three U.S. prisoners freed from North Korea is a win for President Donald Trump.
Bell, who used to work for the State Department, hopes that the return of the three Americans will push Trump to recognize the value of diplomacy, and the people within his government that administer it.
The former prisoners, freed after US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo travelled to Pyongyang for a second meeting with Kim in less than six weeks, landed at around 2:40 am at Joint Base Andrews near Washington. After descending the rolling staircase, they shook hands with the other administration officials. "Congratulations on being in this country", he added.
Chuck Schumer, the top Democrat in the US Senate, warned Trump against going too far, too fast in Singapore.
"We would like to express our deep appreciation to the United States government, President Trump, Secretary Pompeo, and the people of the United States for bringing us home", they said.
Pompeo said: "We had a good day in the sense that I had a good and lengthy conversation with Chairman Kim in preparation for the President's summit". Kim Dong-chul spoke up, and through a translator said: "Yes, we were treated in many different ways". The three men were taken to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center for testing.
Speaking to reporters through a Korean interpreter, one of the former prisoners said he had been subjected to forced labor but attended to medically when unwell.
They also pleaded to see their parents in North Korea again.
Before landing in DC, the men had touched down on American soil in Alaska for a refueling stop. We send our special thanks to the Swedish Ambassador to the DPRK, Ambassador Wendel, and his team for their tireless efforts on behalf of our citizens. On behalf of the State Department and the entire United States government, we wish these Americans and their families the best as they reconnect after this hard period apart. Following the return to the United States of three US citizens imprisoned by Pyongyang, Abe said the Trump-Kim summit will lead to progress on the issue.
In that sense, the U.S.is expected to take a rather flexible stance on the time frame, while sticking to the goal of achieving the complete, verifiable, irreversible dismantlement (CVID) of the North's nuclear arsenal. Last year Trump and Kim threatened nuclear war against each other's countries.
The Trump-Kim summit, and North Korea's avowal that it is committed to "complete denuclearization", have been viewed by some as a breakthrough in the two leader's standoff over North Korea's nuclear program that dominated the early portion of Trump's presidency.
