ISLAMABAD: Senators belonging to the ruling and opposition parties Monday strongly condemned yesterday's assassination attempt on Interior Minister Ahsan Iqbal and urged the nation to forge unity for exterminating the menace of extremism and terrorism.
Mr Iqbal was in Narowal to mobilise support for his re-election.
Ziauddin Yousafzai, the father of Pakistani Nobel Peace Prize victor Malala Yousafzai, called the attempted assassination a "bad omen for upcoming general elections that are supposed to be free, fair, and transparent".
She prayed for speedy recovery of Ahsan Iqbal and said "We hope to see him back in parliament soon".
"The suspect belongs to a religious family and a worker of the TLYP", he said.
Iqbal's son confirmed that his father is out of danger.
According to police, the suspected gunman was identified as 22-year-old Abid Hussain; he remains under arrest and was shifted to an unknown location for police interrogation. The row sparked a three-week sit-in last November by the previously little-known Islamist group, the Tehreek Labaik Ya Rasool Allah, which paralyzed the capital. The protesters made a decision to disperse in return for its resignation of this law minister. The suspect then claimed that he committed the act because he was upset with the PML-N government over the change to the offending clause in the Constitution. However the man who hurled the shoe was arrested and later freed after Iqbal pardoned him.
The elections are expected this summer, but observers say the ballot could be delayed.
The government has formed a joint investigation team (JIT) led by Additional Inspector General Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) Muhammad Tahir to probe the attack. An ATC has remanded him in police custody for 10 days for interrogation.
