Tiger Woods has been at Quail Hollow four days, apparently still not enough time to adjust to the greens.
It was a better day for the Irish all round as Graeme McDowell posted six birdies in an impressive 67, which brought the 2010 US Open victor back into the top 25.
Day did his part with five birdies on his last 10 holes and a daring shot on the 18th when he stood barefoot in the creek to play a shot onto the green. A birdie at the 10th got him to 12 under, but things almost turned disastrous a few holes later, when Day bogeyed the 13th and then badly hooked his drive into the water at the 14th. This was about commitment, and doing all of the things, the work and effort that goes on when he's not under the Tour microscope, that are required to be world No. 1.

Peter Uihlein finished the front nine with five straight birdies and started the back nine with an eagle.
Mickelson had a 64, his lowest score of the season. 13 and 14, the latter dropping him into a tie for the lead with Aaron Wise.
Day rated the victory one of the best of his career, not because of the quality of his play but more due to his ability to get the job done without his best game.
He walked off the seventh green holding his putter, one hand on the grip, the other on the head, as if he wanted to break it in half.
"If I can just post a good number tomorrow, see what happens", Woods said. "So to turn it into a bogey.it gives me a shot tomorrow". Day has a wife and two children-a third on the way-and Woods said life for Day is much different than the 20-somethings dominating the tour today with time restraints and sleep schedules. The previous player to win on the same course where he won a major the previous year was Jack Nicklaus in the 1973 Bing Crosby National Pro-am at Pebble Beach. He starts Sunday four shots out of the lead. Uihlein wound up three shots behind at 7-under 206 and still hasn't won on the PGA Tour.
"This is exciting times for us", Day said.
Champions: Bernhard Langer got his first PGA Tour Champions title of the year when he saved par on the final hole for a 2-under 70 and a one-shot victory in the Insperity Invitational in The Woodlands, Texas. He made the putt to take a two-shot lead, becoming the only player to birdie the hole in the final round.
And yet McIlroy admitted that he is really struggling with his game at the moment following his third round showing, which included seven birdies and two bogeys. Day has found the desire than he lost last year, and the 30-year-old Australian does not feel that far off from that dominant run two years ago that took him to No. 1 in the world.
