AWS' operating income was $1.4 billion for the quarter, a 57% year-over-year increase.
Amazon continues to invest in a wide array of areas.
Sales rose 43 percent to $51.0 billion in the quarter, beating analysts' average estimate of $49.8 billion.
In the same quarter a year ago, the Seattle-based company rang up earnings of $1.48 per share on revenue of $35.71 billion. Analysts expected 1.8 percent growth. That big gain stemmed from growth in the North America business and Amazon Web Services cloud segment, though the worldwide business posted a wider loss.
