Back in 1968, the Ford Mustang Cobra Jet were a dominant force in the world of super stock drag racing and over the past few years, Ford Performance has offered the limited edition Cobra Jet package to hardcore racers around the US. Now comes the return of the Mustang Cobra Jet dragstrip race vehicle by Ford Performance that's targeted to be the most powerful and quickest version from the factory yet, capable of running the quarter-mile in the mid-8-second range while topping 150 miles per hour.
Ford Performance says the 2018 Cobra Jet will run mid-8s at the strip, crossing the finish topping an astonishing 240km/h. Under that high-rising hood is a new supercharged 5.2-liter Coyote V8.
Based on the newest Mustang, it uses a supercharged 5.2-litre Coyote V8 and is capable of demolishing a quarter-mile run in the mid eight-second range, with an insane 150 miles per hour trap speed.
Limited to only 68 examples, the purpose-built dragster is based off the 2018 Mustang and will benefit from a highly-tuned V8, among other things.
Final specifications and details will be released in the coming months while available colors for the Cobra Jet are Race Red and Oxford White.
"Demand for Mustang continues to be very strong, especially overseas, where until recently people couldn't get their hands on one", says Erich Merkle, Ford sales analyst.
Ford has confirmed it is readying its most powerful Mustang ever that will be capable of running the quarter mile in mid-8 seconds with a terminal speed of more than 241km/h.
It might be slower in a straight line, compared to the 2018 Mustang Cobra Jet, but the devilish Dodge will still have the upper hand for enthusiasts who actually want to drive their cars on the road. All of these cars are created to run in the 8-second range in stock form (with tuning work from the owners, of course), but they are all extremely limited in terms of production numbers and none of them are legal for road use.
