"Please note that all areas of Tesla and our suppliers will be required to demonstrate a Model 3 capacity of ~6000/week by building 850 sets of vehicle parts in 24 hours no later than June 30th", Musk wrote in the email obtained by Jalopnik, adding that all Model 3 production at Fremont will move to 24/7 operations.
The email came a day after Tesla announced it will temporarily stop production of the Model 3.
Tesla reported that its production had grown by 40 percent compared to the last quarter of 2017, but this did not abate concerns over Model 3 production, which were exacerbated by a continuous string of reports of production difficulties since assembly began in July 2017 as well as Elon Musk's own comments about the problems being experienced at the Fremont plant.
The Model 3 was already proving a problem production-wise, and when one of Tesla's older vehicles was involved in a fatal crash leading to a voluntary recall, it not only augmented the concerns for the Model 3, but led to a downgrading of Tesla's credit status. Last week, the company built 2,250 Model 3s, he said, along with 2,000 Model S and Model X electric cars.
The assembly line at the company's Fremont, ?California, plant will shut down as part of "planned downtime" to "improve automation", a Tesla spokesperson told dpa.
Tesla Inc TSLA.O shares fell as much as 2 percent in premarket trading on Tuesday, a temporary halt in production of its Model 3 sedan adding to nerves about the electric auto maker's consistent failure to keep its promises on vehicle output.
Workaholic Tesla boss Elon Musk has been working under a lot of stress at work lately, pulling night shifts and sleeping in the office on a cold, cramped sofa. Pacific time on Tuesday and obtained by Jalopnik, CEO Elon Musk informed the company's staff about these plans, together with a number of other new changes being introduced to enable Tesla to finally turn a profit.
Although it's quite obvious that Musk can afford to replace his own furniture with his estimate $20 billion worth, Tesla fans are a dedicated bunch that often praise the founder for his drive to transform technology to run on sustainable energy rather than the more harmful fuels. Based on that result, Tesla said it expects Model 3 production to "climb rapidly" over the next three months. Delays and lower-than-expected volume have postponed revenue from cars being delivered to customers from reaching Tesla's bottom line.
Tesla Inc shares were trading at $296.78 per share on Wednesday morning, up $9.09 (+3.16%).
