Stormy Daniels, the adult film star who alleges she had a sexual encounter with President Trump, is cooperating with Department of Justice investigators, a source close to the investigation tells CBS News' Paula Reid.
Police and security stand outside 30 Rockefeller Plaza, the location for the offices of U.S. President Donald Tump's lawyer Michael Cohen which was raided by the Federal Bureau of Investigation today in the Manhattan borough of New York City, New York, April 9, 2018.
Trump then said he would have chosen a different attorney general if he'd known Jeff Sessions was going to recuse himself from the Russian Federation investigation and said that "many people" have said he should fire special counsel Robert Mueller. Which means that Mueller apparently views the alleged hush money payment to Clifford, the now infamously bungled nondisclosure agreement, and any potential legal ramifications thereof (such as possible violation of campaign finance laws, bank fraud, ethical stumblings on the part of Cohen) as tangential to his purview.
"It's a real disgrace".
The President criticized the raid in early-morning tweets Tuesday.
In this image from video, Michael Avenatti, attorney and spokesperson for adult film star Stormy Daniels, listens to a reporters' question during an interview at The Associated Press, March 21, 2018, in NY. Karen McDougal, a former Playboy playmate who said she had an affair with Trump in 2006, said she sold her story to the National Enquirer, which did not publish it. McDougal said in a lawsuit that the Enquirer's parent company, American Media "worked secretly with Mr Trump's personal 'fixer, ' - Cohen - to suppress her story".
"'Crime/fraud exception' trumps attorney-client privilege, and lawyer can testify under subpoena in criminal proceedings", Whitehouse wrote on Twitter.
The interest in both Daniels and McDougal indicates that federal investigators are trying to determine whether there was a broader pattern or strategy among Trump associates to buy the silence of women whose accounts could harm the president's electoral chances and whether any crimes were committed in doing so, the person said.
As a plaintiff's lawyer, Avennati is "incredibly tenacious" and isn't afraid of "rubbing people the wrong way", said Brian Kabateck, a Los Angeles trial lawyer and the incoming president of the Los Angeles County Bar Association. He added: "A TOTAL WITCH HUNT!" Trump called Mueller's investigation "an attack on our country", prompting new speculation that Trump might seek the removal of the Justice Department's special counsel, Robert Mueller.
Rosenstein's role has infuriated Trump, who was left "stunned" and "livid" by the aggressive move by prosecutors Monday, according to an outside adviser in frequent touch with the White House.
Asked about the Daniels controversy last week, Trump said he did not know about the payment and declined to comment further, instead referring questions to Cohen.
The Monday raids included the Loew's Regency hotel where Cohen has been staying.
