President Donald Trump is expected to roast - and be roasted by - some of his favorite targets at the annual Gridiron dinner Saturday night.
- On his son-in-law: "We were late tonight because Jared could not get through security".
He also made jokes about Vice President Mike Pence, saying that he has been "showing a particularly keen interest in the news these days".
Trump took a sharper edge with Democrats like Nancy Pelosi ("man, she's crazy"), Elizabeth Warren ("Pocahontas") and Joe Biden ("Sleepy Joe"). The president said in an attempt to soften the punch line.
To The New York Times, Trump remarked that they shared status as New York icons but "the only difference is I still own my buildings".
Trump spoke 32 minutes, longer than normal. At one point, a woman heckled Trump to "stop", and had to be shushed by tablemates.
This will be Trump's first Gridiron as president and marks a change from a year ago when he avoided that dinner and the White House Correspondents Dinner.
Trump, who has a reputation for being thin-skinned when it comes to negative reports about his presidency, uncharacteristically threw some barbs at himself. The president, not a professional comedian, had some hits, but also drew silence with some cracks.
- On the First Lady: Trump said he doesn't understand why everyone says #freemelania.
Trump warmed up his for his debut at the annual Washington ritual by tweeting out an attack on the media.
"Mainstream Media in U.S.is being mocked all over the world".
It's still TBD whether Trump will attend the more high-profile Correspondents Dinner in April, but after his genuine compliments for the media in attendance, perhaps (very perhaps) his ice has thawed. "So many people have been leaving the White House", he said, before defending that it is good because he likes new thought.
Per tradition, the Gridiron Club dinner also featured speakers from both political parties.
The president later referenced the rumors that Melania is not happy in the White House.
And in a riff off of Patsy Cline's famous song, White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders, who is attending, is portrayed by a cast member singing, "You see I'm an Arkansas Huckabee, someone who's born to be ... part of the GOP ..."
Trump returned to Washington on Saturday afternoon after a short trip to his estate in Mar-a-Lago, Fla., where he hosted a fundraiser earlier in the day.
"Nobody does self-deprecating humor better than I do". There's Attorney General Jeff Sessions, who Trump slammed on Twitter (again) this week and reportedly has now nicknamed, "Mr. Magoo," after a nearsighted cartoon character. "We finally have it running like a finetuned machine", Trump joked.
