Dalton police said they were called to Dalton High School after the gunfire was reported. He was taken into custody without incident after a 30- to 45-minute standoff with officers, and his motivations remained a mystery, Dalton Police spokesman Bruce Frazier said.
The incident began about 11:30 a.m. when Davidson refused to let students into his classroom, Frazier said.
The incident prompted the high school to go into lockdown as police helped to evacuate students (above). Classes will resume on Friday.
So, 11Alive went to the school on Thursday to find out how much they knew about Davidson's mental state.
Police records also show that in 2017, Davidson left his classroom suddenly and school staffers found him a few blocks away unable to speak.
Davidson has been accused of "exasperated strike, conveying weapon on school grounds, terroristic dangers, neglectful direct, ownership of firearm amid commission of a wrongdoing, and upsetting state funded school", as per Dalton Police.
"It would allow teachers, with the right amount of training, to have a gun to protect themselves and their students.[.] How many teachers want a gun?" Students were being trampled and screaming.
In a 2016 report, Davidson, 53, allegedly walked into a Dalton police department claiming that he wanted to confess to killing a woman.
"To learn that a teacher you know and trust has opened fire in your school must be devastating, traumatizing and scary really", Imam tells the Times Free Press. He said that Mr. Davidson had been a "very good teacher" who was "well thought of", adding that he had been employed as a teacher there since 2004.
"I feel like there just shouldn't be guns at school at all", she said. The Social studies teacher also serves as play-by-play voice of the school's football team, according to updates the Dalton Police Department was giving the community on its Facebook Page.
Wednesday's incident wasn't his first unusual interaction with law enforcement in Dalton, a city of nearly 35,000 residents about 80 miles northwest of Atlanta. The student was treated on scene by first responders, police said.
He was finally found sitting on the curb along a street a few blocks from the campus, being propped up by two school staff members, police said.
Three teachers were among the 17 people killed in the recent school shooting in Parkland, Fla.
