- Defense Secretary Jim Mattis is expected to propose to President Donald Trump that transgender members of the USA military be allowed to continue serving, despite the president's call last summer for a ban on all transgender service, according to two US officials with knowledge of the issue.
Trump is said to be especially pissed that McMaster said there is "incontrovertible" evidence that Russian Federation meddled in the 2016 US presidential election at a security conference in Munich attended by Defense Secretary Jim Mattis.
According to a half-dozen sources, the Pentagon is examining options to remove McMaster from Trump's direct employ in a move that could see the three-star general returned to a military position outside the White House-perhaps with an additional star for his troubles. The task of easing McMaster out of his role as national security adviser presents a unique challenge for the White House.
"This is a complex issue, and the secretary is taking his time to consider the information he has been given", chief Pentagon spokeswoman Dana White told reporters Thursday. Whereas Trump and Flynn shared a conspiratorial view of the world (not to mention rabid Islamophobia), McMaster's punctuated, self-serious style has reportedly irritated the president.
Officials told CNN the White House wants to find McMaster a four-star job that will acknowledge his service. "Any decisions with regard to the staff - the White House will make those determinations", she said.
In tweets sent in July, Trump announced his intentions to ban transgender people from serving in the military.
Politico said a "senior administration official" summarized the memo from McMaster to Secretary of Defense James Mattis. "Remember the Dirty Dossier, Uranium, Speeches, Emails and the Podesta Company!"
The defense secretary was scheduled to brief the president Wednesday, but the meeting was postponed and will occur soon, officials said, speaking on the condition of anonymity to discuss policy deliberations.
Despite his public praise of McMaster, Trump has never liked him.
If a suitable job couldn't be found, McMaster could opt to retire.
