Police in OH say a toddler who died after her mother found her on a porch in freezing temperatures had wandered from home when her father fell asleep.
When the mother returned to the home after a two-hour outing, she discovered Wynter unconscious and immediately dialed 911.
Wynter Parker, 2, was later pronounced dead at the hospital.
She died after paramedics took her to Akron Children's Hospital.
Wynter's mother found her when she arrived home.
"I cried because I just don't understand how a 2-year old could be outside and you not know", said neighbor Crystal Lucas to WJW, a Cleveland Fox News associate. The temperature in Akron on Friday dropped down to around around 15 degrees.
Upon finding her daughter unresponsive, Wynter's mother called emergency services, telling a 911 dispatcher that she had no idea how long the girl had been outside.
According to detectives, Wynter's mother left for about two hours to run errands and left the little girl and her 4-year-old brother at home with their father.
"My daughter, she was outside!"
Police are still investigating how the toddler got outside and no arrests have been made, but the lack of details hasn't stopped people from speculating about what may have happened. My daughter, she's not breathing!'
Lucas said the woman who lives in the apartment kept to herself and had two children, the 2-year-old and a boy. "It literally broke my heart".
The medical examiner's office said the toddler suffered severe hypothermia, but an official cause of death has not yet been determined.
The child's death is under investigation, and authorities on Monday had not said whether charges may be filed in the case.
A memorial of stuffed animals has been left on the porch of the family's apartment building.
