The former White House chief strategist was subpoenaed last week by special counsel Robert Mueller in his investigation of Trump campaign ties to Russian Federation, and Bannon will be required to testify before a grand jury.
The move is reportedly the first time Mueller has used a grand jury subpoena to seek information from a member of Trump's "inner circle".
A source close to the House Intelligence Committee told Fox News that the former White House chief strategist and Trump campaign manager will likely be questioned over information in Michael Wolff's book: "Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House".
Rooney would not comment on whether the committee had issued a subpoena to Bannon during its closed-door interview, but he told reporters that the issue "dominating the day" was over executive privilege and the presidential transition. Capping off the show's cold open that also featured Fred Armisen as journalist Michael Wolff, Murray popped in as White House pariah Steve Bannon in a send up of MSNBC's daily Beltway banter sesh, Morning Joe.
The House Intelligence Committee is speeding toward a conclusion of its interviews in its Russian Federation investigation. "I never said [Donald Trump, Jr.] was treasonous".
Much was made in the past week over quotes in Wolff's book by former White House Chief Strategist Steve Bannon that defamed the Trump family.
Amid partisan clashes on the panel, the GOP majority is also probing the conduct of Federal Bureau of Investigation agents involved in probes of Hillary Clinton's emails as well as of Donald Trump and his associates during the campaign.
Bannon was also one of the officials Trump Jr. emailed about his repeated contacts with WikiLeaks in September 2016, according to documents obtained by The Atlantic.
This comes after Bannon first described the meeting at Trump Tower between Trump's top campaign staff and a group of Russian representatives as both "treasonous" and "unpatriotic"-and then went on to explain how to do secret meetings with the Russians correctly". He was also not present for the controversial firing of Mr Trump's former Federal Bureau of Investigation director, James Comey.
Trump has denied wrongdoing, denounced the investigation as a witch hunt, and derided "Sloppy Steve" Bannon for discussing things he doesn't know anything about. Pressed on the subject, Lewandowski said "of course" Trump could handle an interview with Mueller's team, "but the question is ... is that what is in the best interest of the American people?"
