But it did, and Mayweather remained undefeated and cashed in on a nine-figure pay day.
One would have to think if Mayweather did fight in the UFC they'd give him an opponent who isn't very good at taking people down to the ground.
Should Mayweather actually decide to go into a deal with UFC, there's no doubt that he would be paired with McGregor again at some point, and there's no doubt the world would once again be watching.
The rumors first began to fly when Mayweather himself stated that he was talking to the UFC about a multi-fight deal.
He said: "If I want, I can go, I can come right back to the UFC, I can go fight in the Octagon".
"Floyd talked about it". If I want to I can come right back to the UFC. "Like legitimately. So I texted him 'is Floyd really talking about fighting in MMA?' And he goes 'yeah, he's f-king insane, I told him he'd get killed but he's still talking about doing it'".
White added, "We're interested in doing something with Floyd". "It's real. He was talking about [boxing] Conor McGregor".
"Floyd talked about it", the comedian said on The Joe Rogan Experience. "He usually tips his hand when he's in the media and then that shit ends up happening".
As he makes all of us aware on a regular basis, Floyd Mayweather has earned an terrible lot of money during his illustrious boxing career.
And with Mayweather's challenges inside the boxing ring seemingly now a distant memory, the UFC president clearly believes there's a chance he could thrash out an agreement to pitch "Money" Mayweather into the octagon, suggesting that there was a "realistic possibility" that a deal could be struck. Mayweather versus McGregor f**king happened.
There are plenty of reasons why this shouldn't happen.
As incredulous boxing purists were at the sight of the UFC lightweight champions talking trash and stepping into the squared circle, the idea of Mayweather, or any boxer for that matter, pulling on the four-ounce gloves and entering the famous cage, was met with even more vociferous disdain. If a Mayweather move to UFC happened, there would be nearly no chance that it would be against McGregor - UFC's lightweight champion.
Mayweather's utterings could have been disregarded as social media talk from a retired fighter looking to keep the hype train rolling.
