The California-based company unveiled its desktop PC iMac Pro at its annual developer's conference WWDC in June this year. "This will be our fastest and most powerful Mac ever, which brings workstation-class computing to iMac for the first time", said John Ternus, Apple's vice president of hardware engineering at the event.
Apple iMac Pro has a 27-inch 5K Retina display with a resolution of 5120×2880 pixels. The RAM is upgradeable to 64 GB or 128 GB while the SSD can go up to 2 TB or 4 TB of storage.
Apple iMac Pro will be up for pre-orders in the USA starting December 14 at $4,999 (Rs 3,30,000 approx) for the base model.
Other reports suggested that the addition of custom Apple silicon in the iMac Pro could enable always-on "Hey Siri" support.
Apple's iMac Pro goes on sale on Thursday starting at $US5000.
The device is configurable to 16GB Radeon Pro Vega GPU and offers 32GB 2666MHz DDR4 ECC memory. These will be the 10-core variant, which is also going on sale in select markets from tomorrow. As an absolute monster of a machine, the iMac Pro features specifications that are, frankly, a little more than overkill.
The iMac Pro will be available in 8-, 10-, and 18-core Xeon SKUs, offering a total of 16-, 20- and 36-threads for completing your most intense multi-threaded applications. He also praised the iMac Pro's low noise and temperature.
The new iMac Pro will present vivid opportunities to compete against its arch rival, Microsoft. Apple is yet to unveil detailed pricing for the other models. It has 802.11ac WiFi built in, along with Bluetooth 4.2.
But $5,000 should get you a lot of computer for your money. It also comes with dedicated SDXC card slot and a 3.5mm headphone jack. Just like the other iMac computers, the iMac Pro is all display, with the rest of the hardware crammed inside handsome aluminium shell behind the screen. It comes with a new Magic Keyboard, and you can choose between a Magic Mouse 2 or a Magic Trackpad 2.
