In an interview last month, Apple CEO Tim Cook said about Apple AR headset, "There are rumors and stuff about companies working on those - we obviously don't talk about what we're working on, but today I can tell you the technology itself doesn't exist to do that in a quality way". Unlike competing solutions like Microsoft's HoloLens kit, which relies on transparent glass to overlay computer graphics, Totem's fusion of real-time video offers users "seamless blend" transitions between AR and VR environments.
After the securing of the startup, numerous employees of VRvana have been moved to Apple's campus in Cupertino. The ARKit development software has been the only public offering the company has released, back in June, which has seen widespread adoption by many studios looking to experiment in the field. The device retains the inside-out tracking with headset-mounted cameras, but also uses these cameras as a passthrough to show the real world inside the headset and then project virtual images on the screen to augment reality.
Apple Inc.is reported to have acquired Vrvana Inc., a Canadian virtual reality company for $30 million, according to a report from TechCrunch. Hand tracking is one of the technologies that Apple's PrimeSense team in Israel has brought to Apple.
VRvana's Totem is now tethered, but I assume Apple will solve this issue over the next few years.
