"Their legal theory has been that we hid the fact that we had a problem with Roger", Gerson Zweifach, Fox's general counsel, wrote in the email, referring to the prosecutors and Mr. Ailes, "and now it will be applied to O'Reilly, and they will insist on full knowledge of all complaints about O'Reilly's behavior in the workplace, regardless of who settled them". But the $32 million settlement reached in January has not been reported previously.
Carlson slammed her former network a day after the New York Times reported executives were aware of the settlement when it resigned the since-fired O'Reilly in February to a four-year, $100 million deal. Writing on the ties between O'Reilly and Weinstein, the Times's Jim Rutenberg notes that, "a full, public airing did not come to be until those meddling reporters came along".
The parent company of Fox News says it knew about a settlement over sexual harassment allegations against Bill O'Reilly by an on-air analyst before the company extended the ex-host's $25 million contract in February.
He made suggestive remarks to her on the air for years afterward, such as recommending that she dance at a strip club, and her other complains against O'Reilly "included allegations of repeated harassment, a nonconsensual sexual relationship and the sending of gay pornography and other sexually explicit material to her, according to the people briefed on the matter", the Times reports.
O'Reilly claimed to the New York Times that he "never mistreated anyone" and claimed he could "prove it". "The Times ignored that evidence, sworn under oath, and chose to rely on unsubstantiated allegations, anonymous sources and incomplete leaked or stolen documents".
Mr. O'Reilly told The New York Times that he had been receiving threatening messages during his time at Fox News and was forwarding some of the material to Ms. Wiehl since she was one of his attorneys, according to the report.
Even though Fox knew about O'Reilly's history it seems that Murdoch and his sons decided the network couldn't take losing such a strong star at a time when Megyn Kelly had just left the network.
