India defeated arch-foes Pakistan 3-1 to top Pool A in Asia Cup at the Maulana Bhashani National Hockey Stadium here on Sunday.
India a strong title contender defeated Japan by 5-1 in their first match while thrashed Bangladesh by 7-0 in the second match. In fact, the Men in Blue managed to control the proceedings for most of the match.
After wasting another penalty corner, Pakistan were denied by young India goalkeeper Suraj Karkera, who saved Mohammed Attiq's shot from close range as India went into the breather leading by a goal. Chinglensana opened India's account in the first quarter of the game following which Ramandeep bettered India's advantage in the 43rd minute and just two minutes later, Harmanpreet added a third for India.
The Indians extended their lead to three goals as they scored two goals in two minutes towards the end of the third quarter.
Thus, India continued their recent domination over the neighbouring rivals, which includes consecutive wins in the Hockey World League Semi-Final in London earlier this year.
Despite defeat in the crucial match, Pakistan reached the "Super 4s" stage with four points on the basis of a better goal difference.
