Three private universities retain their claim as Oklahoma's highest-ranking schools in the 2018 Best Colleges report released Tuesday by U.S. News & World Report.
"It is quite an honor that the University of Louisiana Monroe is recognized as a National University for the second year in a row". Clemson's overall score is its highest ever.
NMSU improved more than 20 spots and is tied for 198 this year with North Dakota State University, Nova Southeastern University (Florida) and University of North Carolina-Charlotte.
"Texas A&M University is one of the best values in American higher education", John Sharp, chancellor of The Texas A&M University System, says.
Local schools routinely boast a bit about these and other rankings, but also point out weaknesses in the methodology used by U.S. News.
Many higher education experts warn the U.S. News rankings should be taken with a grain of salt.
In the overall national rankings, Princeton was named the best college in the country, followed by Harvard, the University of Chicago, Yale, Columbia, MIT, Stanford, Penn, Duke and Cal Tech.
As the publisher notes, a "host of intangibles" go into finding the right college, and rankings are just one piece of the puzzle.
The College of Engineering is ranked 34th among public universities with doctoral programs, up from 41st previous year.
USC Aiken was ranked the best regional public college in the South, and the best regional public college for veterans.

The rankings remain influential among students and parents, who rely on them to guide their choice of school, as well as among colleges and universities, which use them to market their campuses and programs and attract students, faculty and philanthropic dollars.
Employer Reputation is based on 30,000 responses to the QS Employer Survey where institutions report the schools where they source the most competent, innovative, effective graduates. Ultimately, the weighted values result in an overall score between 0 and 100 for eligible schools, with the top school or schools in each category scoring 100.
