In a Twitter message, Pete Piringer, a spokesman for Montgomery County Fire and Rescue, said it is the first time since September 11, 2001, that all of the Federal Emergency Management Agency Urban Search and Rescue Teams have been deployed and activated at the same time.
A group of Kansas City-area firefighters is answering a call for help in Texas.
"I am so proud of our department and our capabilities to assist other agencies in their time of need", said MFRD Chief Mark Foulks.
At least four other Charlotte rescue teams will head to Texas Thursday to assist.
Kansas officials say they reached out to Texas offering the support.
North Carolina Emergency Management created the swift water rescue program in 1996 in the wake of Hurricane Fran. "We hold the people of Texas in our prayers".
It is unclear how long the VFRS members will be in Texas, but Gormick says it'll depend on how many operational periods this crisis will last for.
Governor Cuomo's office also announced on Wednesday that more resources from New York's National Guard would be deployed: "In total, Governor Cuomo has deployed a total of 119 Airmen, three HH-60 Pavehawk rescue helicopters, two HC-130 search and rescue aircraft and several boats and watercraft".
"That allows us to hone our skills a little bit, and keep them fresh in our minds", said rescue team member Matthew Broughton.
The 14-member team is "healthy, safe and anxious to get to work", Ryan said, and is awaiting assignments. They will set up their own shelter and are bringing their own food and water. Enough members are staying behind in Vermont to provide assistance if any is needed here.
