The AFP news agency quoted a senior police officer in Khartoum whom it did not name as saying the ambassador "died while he was swimming in his pool at his house". The Russian Foreign Ministry has verified the news. Russian embassy staff at the residence in Sudan's capital city called for medical assistance, but doctors were unable to save the ambassador's life. Initial reports ruled out any "foul play" in the death of the ambassador, the foreign ministries added.
The Foreign Ministry in Khartoum announced Shirinsky's death and offered condolences to the Russian government in a statement praising his diplomatic efforts.
Russia's ambassador to Turkey, Andrei Karlov, was assassinated while speaking at an art gallery in Ankara in an act famously captured on video December 19.
His body has been taken to the morgue as local police awaiting instructions from Russian foreign ministry.
Al-Hadar stated that Shirinskiy made a lot of effort to develop relations between Russian Federation and Sudan since he was appointed to the Khartoum embassy in 2013.
"Immediately after receiving detailed information from employees at the Russian embassy in Khartoum, we will inform you about the circumstances of our colleague's death".
He studied at Moscow Institute of International Relations and had been appointed as ambassador to Khartoum in 2013.
Shirinsky's long diplomatic career also included postings in Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Yemen.
