"The [bullet] fragmented and did substantial damage to bones, internal organs, and blood vessels". He remains sedated but has been able to respond to his family.

Vice President Mike Pence earlier on Thursday said he visited the hospital where Scalise was being treated.

Brett Horton, Scalise's chief of staff, read a statement from Scalise's wife on Friday, thanking everyone "for the incredible amount of prayers and warm wishes we've received since Wednesday's events". "The congressman will require additional operations, and will be in the hospital for some time".

The 51-year-old Scalise, as well as a police officer, a congressional aide and a lobbyist, were wounded on Wednesday when a man identified as James Hodgkinson, 66, from the St. Louis suburb of Belleville, Illinois, opened fire on the lawmakers who were practising for an annual charity baseball game between Republicans and Democrats.

"In Washington we have our disagreements, but we all agree that we are here to serve this nation we love and the people who call it home", Trump said.

The president says that because of the "tremendous pain and suffering he's now enduring. our country will perhaps become closer, more unified". Scalise was hit as a gunman sprayed bullets into a GOP congressional baseball practice outside Washington D.C.

He sustained a single rifle shot to his left hip.

"I understand he was awake on scene but by the time he was transported by helicopter to the MedStar trauma center, he was in shock", Sava said.

The Louisiana Republican was shot in the hip Wednesday morning in the baseball practice shooting by an IL man with grudges against President Donald Trump and the GOP.

House Speaker Paul Ryan and Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi told CNN's Jake Tapper on "Erin Burnett OutFront" that despite party affiliation they were both on "Team Scalise" on Thursday. When the members of the Republican team were announced, mention of Scalise's name drew a standing ovation throughout the stadium.
