It's all speculation now, but LSU hiring Orgeron may not be as positive for Alabama, Auburn and the rest of the SEC West as it seems on the surface.
Texas has not officially fired its football coach, Charlie Strong, but that is expected to happen Saturday morning when school president Gregory L. Fenves makes an announcement.
Orgeron heard from far and wide after being named the Tigers' 33rd head coach, receiving congratulatory messages from, among others, Gov. John Bel Edwards and the man Orgeron replaced September 25, Les Miles.
He took a year off, then was named LSU's defensive line coach in January of 2015 and later its recruiting coordinator.
It was the second winning interim stint at a major program for Orgeron, a 55-year-old Louisianan who went 6-2 at USC after Lane Kiffin was sacked in 2013.
SEC Network Paul Finebaum is holding his breath following LSU's decision to hire Ed Orgeron as its next head football coach.
Jenkins, who also tutored Aranda, stepped away from coaching from 2000-2006 before joining the Philadelphia Eagles staff for three seasons. The school also reportedly went after Florida State head coach Jimbo Fisher.
Alleva said LSU's coaching search was "never going to come down to a bidding war", adding "we knew that coach O was never going to play games with us".
"We're proud to be a part of Louisiana and we understand LSU, what it means", Orgeron said.
Orgeron hasn't been a full-time head coach since his three-year stint at Ole Miss from 2005 to 2007 (where he was just 10-25), but he has twice held the role of interim head coach.
No matter the Tigers' new hire for offensive coordinator - which Orgeron said he will further evaluate for LSU's coaching staff after the upcoming bowl game - it will not mean the Tigers will have to cut ties with interim offensive coordinator Steve Ensminger, the coach said.
Being a players' coach might end up serving Orgeron more than being a guy meticulous with the x's and o's. Coach O was never going to play games with us. They posted videos on social media of a locker-room celebration following the big win over Texas A&M to cap the regular season. "I have a mindset on what we're going to go get, who we're going to go get, and we're going to go get it". The Tigers already have a significant advantage as the only Power Five team in talent-rich Louisiana, where top prospects often choose to stay home, and Orgeron's status as both an acclaimed recruiter and a native of the state will likely allow LSU to keep the state locked down.
LSU is one of those football programs that recruits itself.
Orgeron will undoubtedly be judged moving forward on how LSU keeps up with Alabama, which has won six straight games against the Tigers. The university is paying a $9.6 million buyout to Miles. Alleva called the list of names Orgeron had in mind "phenomenal".
